Eight rules to get more happiness from the money you spend

Spending more money can surely buy us more things! Can spending more money make us more happy? Different people will have different opinions about money's ability to make us happy. However, there are ways by which one can create increasing amounts of happiness without increasing the amount of money spent.


The eight rules to increase the amount of happiness one derives from spending money are listed as follows:
  1. Buy more experiences and fewer material goods
  2. Use money to benefit others rather than themselves
  3. Buy many small pleasures rather than fewer large ones
  4. Eschew extended warranties and other forms of overpriced insurance
  5. Delay consumption;
  6. Think about what you are not thinking about
  7. Beware of comparison shopping
  8. Follow the herd instead of the heart
These eight rules are an outcome of research paper titled If Money Doesn't Make You Happy Then You Probably Aren't Spending It Right.
